Mechanical Elephant Walks Through London: Weird news at Its Best

Did you ever feel the world weighing down on you? Then you should have been in the streets of London when a ten-ton mechanical elephant was seen walking through the streets lighting up faces and towering down upon your tiny presence before it. This wacky invention is the work of Francois Delaroziere who was asked to make it as a celebratory token for the death of Jules Verne. Standing at the height of roughly a building, this piece of abomination needs as many as twenty two people who pull and push a combination of  hydraulic levers and buttons to be able to control the mammoth machine and make it move. The strange bit is the fact that the mechanical beast can actually imitate a real elephant and spray water from its huge mechanical trunk.

Coober Pedy - The Underground Town in Australia

The Australian town of Coober Pedy has a population of around 2,000 and is famous for two things. Firstly, the town is known as the opal capital of the world because of the quantity of precious gems that are mined there. Secondly, and the reason for this gallery, Coober Pedy is renowned for it’s underground residences, mostly in refurbished mines.

The severe desert climate made a lot of residents move to live underground, in caves. In summer temperatures on the surface can reach 40-50 degrees Celsius (over 100 degrees Fahrenheit). A cave home usually has three bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom and lounge that are excavated out of the rock in the hillsides. Such homes don’t require air-conditioning, because they remain at a constant temperature.

The landscapes of these gardens are works of art in and of themselves, but de Vaivre’s brilliant photographs add that extra element of fresh and captivating beauty that makes this series so special.

In Greek mythology, the Labyrinth designed by Daedalus to confine the Minotaur, the labyrinth, but it is a symbolic meaning, too. "Walking the Labyrinth" is said to be a profoundly personal and revealing meditation by which a person gains insight into his true nature.

Labyrinths, by contrast, are designed to be a strategic issue, which is one of humanity's original physics puzzle games. Unlike a maze, which is designed to be contemplative, but easy to fill, a labyrinth is deliberately difficult to navigate. Both mazes and labyrinths symbolically reveal two sides of the human spirit: the complexity and simplicity of design and mystery, intuition and sensory experience. They are emblematic of the eternal philosophical tension between free will and destiny. Here are some of the most complex labyrinths, beautiful and creative and labyrinths worldwide.
